Virus Prevalence and Genetic Diversity Across a Wild Bumblebee Community

چکیده

Viruses are key population regulators, but we have limited knowledge of the diversity and ecology viruses. This is even case in wild host populations that provide ecosystem services, where small fitness effects may major ecological impacts aggregate. One such group hosts bumblebees, which a role pollination food crops suffered declines range contractions recent decades. In this study, investigate four recently discovered bumblebee viruses (Mayfield virus 1, Mayfield 2, River Liunaeg virus, Loch Morlich virus), two previously known infect both bumblebees managed honeybees (Acute bee paralysis Slow virus) from isolates Scotland. We environmental factors determine viral presence absence. show were more genetically diverse than shared with honeybees. Coinfection potentially important shaping prevalence: found strong positive association between after controlling for species, location other relevant variables. tested relationship variables (temperature, UV radiation, wind speed, prevalence), as had few sampling sites, thus low power site-level analyses, could not conclude anything regarding these also describe communities at our sites. study represents first step description predictors infection wild.

Genetic diversity, parasite prevalence and immunity in wild bumblebees.

Inbreeding and a consequent loss of genetic diversity threaten small, isolated populations. One mechanism by which genetically impoverished populations may become extinct is through decreased immunocompetence and higher susceptibility to parasites. Here, we investigate the relationship between immunity and inbreeding in bumblebees, using Hebridean island populations of Bombus muscorum. We sampl...

Prevalence and genetic diversity of Aichi virus strains in stool samples from community and hospitalized patients.

Aichi virus has been proposed as a causative agent of gastroenteritis. A total of 457 stool specimens from children hospitalized with acute diarrhea and 566 stool specimens from adults and children involved in 110 gastroenteritis outbreaks were screened for the presence of Aichi virus by reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) amplification of the genomic region of the 3C and 3D (3CD) nonstructural ...

Parasites and genetic diversity in an invasive bumblebee

Biological invasions are facilitated by the global transportation of species and climate change. Given that invasions may cause ecological and economic damage and pose a major threat to biodiversity, understanding the mechanisms behind invasion success is essential. Both the release of non-native populations from natural enemies, such as parasites, and the genetic diversity of these populations...
